Through STEP’s apprenticeship job placement program, you can be placed in the right environment to gain hands-on experience essential to the painting trade, including preparing and cleaning surfaces, calculating and mixing coatings, identifying and applying a range of sealants, stains, paints, enamels, epoxies, and liquid membranes, and installing wall coverings. You’ll also learn to work safely from heights and to handle and store painting materials properly.

The Apprenticeship Pathway is the most common route to becoming a certified painter and decorator in BC. Most pre-apprentices take the Direct Entry route, starting work for an employer as a labourer, helper, or pre-apprentice, then taking their first level of apprenticeship training after gaining a few months of hands-on experience and being sponsored as an apprentice. If you’re in high school, you can also begin through a Youth Train in Trades program.
The Apprenticeship Pathway includes:
- Structured Training: A combination of paid, on-the-job training under a qualified journeyperson, alongside classroom-based technical training.
- Duration: Typically about three years, combining roughly 4,860 hours of hands-on work experience with about 540 hours of technical classroom instruction.
- Progressive Certification: Apprentices complete three levels of training, with increasing responsibility, before becoming fully certified.
- Exam & Certification: Upon completion, apprentices take the interprovincial (Red Seal) certification exam to become certified journeyperson painter and decorators.

CERTFICATION CHALLENGE PATHWAY
The Certification Challenge Pathway is less common and intended for experienced painter and decorators without formal apprenticeship training in BC.
- Experience Requirement: Candidates must have substantial, verifiable painting work experience (around 7,290 hours) gained in Canada or internationally.
- Documentation: Extensive documentation of work history, previous employment, and relevant painting experience.
