STEP, the Skilled Trades Employment Program, is a no-fee program from the BC Construction Association (BCCA) that helps people start careers in the trades. For aspiring plumbers, that means connecting you with employers who hire and train apprentices while providing one-to-one job search support, including resume preparation, interview coaching, soft skill development, and ongoing support as you begin your apprenticeship. If eligible, STEP can also help cover the cost of tools, work gear, personal protective equipment (PPE), and short-term safety training.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN
Through STEP’s apprenticeship job placement program, you’ll have the opportunity to work with employers who provide the hands-on experience essential to becoming a plumber. As an apprentice, you’ll develop practical skills, including measuring, cutting and joining pipe, reading blueprints, installing fixtures and systems, and following plumbing codes and safety standards. You’ll also learn how to troubleshoot and repair plumbing systems, from simple residential fixes to complex commercial and industrial installations.

There is more than one way to become a certified plumber in BC. While the Apprenticeship Pathway is ideal for those new to the trade who want structured, progressive learning, the Certification Challenge Pathway is better suited to experienced workers who can demonstrate comprehensive industry knowledge and skills.
APPRENTICESHIP PATHWAY FOR PLUMBERS
The Apprenticeship Pathway is the most common route to becoming a certified plumber in BC. Pre-apprentices have two options to start a plumbing apprenticeship; they can either take entry-level trades training, like a Foundation program, or they can take the Direct Entry route and start working for an plumbing company as a Labourer, Helper, or Pre-Apprentice, and take their first level of apprenticeship training after gaining at least a few months of hands-on training from their employer and being sponsored as an apprentice.
The Apprenticeship Pathway includes:
- Structured Training: A combination of paid, on-the-job training under a qualified journeyperson, alongside classroom-based technical training.
- Duration: Typically about four years, combining roughly 6,300 hours of hands-on work experience with about 900 hours of technical classroom instruction.
- Progressive Certification: Apprentices complete four levels of training, with increasing responsibility, before becoming fully certified.
- Exam & Certification: Upon completion, apprentices take the interprovincial (Red Seal) certification exam to become certified journeyperson plumbers.
The Apprenticeship Pathway is best suited for individuals who are new to the trade and need structured, guided training that provides hands-on experience under the mentorship of experienced professionals.
CERTFICATION CHALLENGE PATHWAY
The Certification Challenge Pathway is less common and intended for experienced plumbers without formal apprenticeship training in BC.
- Experience Requirement: Candidates must have substantial, verifiable plumbing work experience (around 9,450 hours) gained in Canada or internationally.
- Documentation: Extensive documentation of work history, previous employment, and relevant plumbing experience.
- Assessment: A thorough assessment of skills, experience, and knowledge by SkilledTradesBC.
- Exam & Certification: Upon approval, candidates take the interprovincial (Red Seal) certification exam directly.
The Certification Challenge Pathway is best suited for experienced plumbers who have learned the trade through non-traditional paths, such as working abroad or through extensive informal industry experience.

How does a plumbing apprenticeship work in BC?
A plumbing apprenticeship in BC combines hands-on training with technical classroom instruction to prepare you for certification. Here’s the process:
1. Find an Apprenticeship Opportunity and/or Start a Foundation Program
- If it’s feasible for you, look into Plumber Foundation programs at your local trades college, or if you’re in high school, ask your career counsellor about a Youth Train in Trades program, where you can earn secondary and post-secondary credits at the same time.
- Connect with a registered apprenticeship sponsor (employer) through programs like STEP.
- You’ll receive guidance and support finding apprenticeship employment opportunities in the plumbing trade.
2. Complete On-the-Job Training
- Gain about 6,300 hours (approximately four years) of paid work experience under a certified journeyperson plumber.
- Develop essential skills in pipe work, fixture and system installation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repairs.
3. Attend Technical Classroom Training
- Complete about 900 hours of technical training at an approved institution or trade school, spread across four levels.

4. Advance Through Apprenticeship Levels
- Progress through a structured curriculum covering foundational to advanced plumbing skills.

5. Certification and the Red Seal Exam
